Dr. Thangi Chhangte, missionary to Asia. As a linguist and translator, Thangi’s ministry is to make written access to the Bible, hymn books and some other Christian literature available to tribal peoples in remote locations. She has developed written languages for 5 people groups as of 2019 and has others in progress. She reports of God’s continued faithfulness in her ministry and asks that we pray for her as she labors among this region of more than 30 different people groups. A current prayer need is funding for a 4 wheel drive vehicle to navigate the difficult terrain in these remote areas.
Dear Praying Friends,
Greetings from Asia.
First of all, thank you for your faithful prayers and financial contributions for the past year. It was the most challenging year so far, especially with communication issues. I found out, much to my dismay that most of you have not been receiving my mail. I think I have finally resolved the issue. In this part of the world, phones and internet services exist only sporadically in the best of times. And should mob violence break out due to fake news on social media, the authorities are quick to stop all social media and internet services instead of finding the source of the fake news.
In terms of the ministry, however, it was a year of bountiful harvest. So much happened that I have been going almost nonstop, putting in over 60 hours a week.
So far, we have printed 300 hymn books and they have all been sent out to the churches. Proceeds from the sale of the books will go towards building 3 churches. Layout and editing were major challenges that took up a considerable amount of time. Add to that frequent and long power cuts.
The translation work for one group has taken on a life of its own. Last year I printed out test copies of books that have been checked and edited: the four gospels; Acts; 1, 2 Thessalonians; 1, 2 Timothy; Titus; Philemon; 1, 2, 3 John and Jude. Right now I am checking Romans and the translator is working on 1 Corinthians. The team is pushing with all its might to reach our target goal of the complete New Testament by 2020. I have also printed illustrated Old Testament short stories in Idu.
Last year also marked the official beginning of translation in another people group language, starting with the Old Testament. The first draft of Genesis is now finished. I am training a brother as we go along.
I have also been supervising translation in two languages of other Asian people groups.
All of these were completed in spite of major computer problems that involved repairs, replacements and debugging on bended knees. The added challenges were major software upgrades where I had to manage all the translation projects and train the translators as well.
I will be taking s very short trip from mid-February to end of March to figure out digital communication and monitoring issues. (Translation, how to send email securely.) Looking forward to getting in touch.
And now for prayer time:
1. Praise for good progress in translation.
2. Praise for the successful start of the first Sunday School class for one of the people groups.
3. Praise for a good start with another people group translation.
4. Finances – still facing a major shortfall of almost 20% a month.
5. Funds for a new car.
6. Pray that I will be able to get online at least once a week!
7. For a fruitful Home Assignment.
Thank you for upholding me in your prayers.
