Alberto and his wife Kathy are new missionaries with Grace church. They have a one year old daughter and are expecting another child later this year.  Alberto experienced salvation while at a summer camp at age 16.  After college graduation, Alberto moved to Guadalajara and began teaching in several Bible studies and weekly youth gatherings.  God used this time to show him the need for sound doctrine and biblical preaching.  In searching for a place that would equip him for pastoral ministry, God led him to the Masters Seminary in S. California where he received his Masters of Divinity and Masters of Theology.  Alberto and his wife then returned to Guadalajara where Alberto currently serves as teaching Pastor at Iglesia Comunidad Biblica.  They have seen rapid growth in the church as Alberto faithfully teaches and preaches the gospel.  Discipleship classes and new ministries have started, including new membership classes and young adults groups.  Alberto travels often to attend and speak at national and regional conferences.  He has a vision to bring sound doctrine and teaching to the church throughout Latin America, as the Lord leads him.  Pray for God's grace, strength and wisdom to Alberto and his family as they seek to glorify God in both their ministry and family life.

November 2019 Newsletter

Dear friends and supporters, recently Alberto has been preaching through John six, highlighting God’s amazing grace and love. In the Bread of Life discourse (6:22–71), Jesus shows that the Father draws people to the Son, the Son gives Himself as ransom for them, and the Spirit gives life to those whom the Father elects and the Son sustains. The Lord's work of salvation continues to save men and women from every tribe, tongue, and nation, including Mexico!

Trip to Germany

During September we enjoyed a few weeks of vacation as we visited Kathy’s family in Germany. We traveled there to attend her brother’s wedding. Our trips to Germany are always very refreshing. The time we spend with dear friends and family recharges and encourages us.

With Anni and Toby, the bride and groom, wearing traditional Bavarian outfits. The women wear Dirndl dresses and the men wear Lederhosen.
Sophia with her grandparents, Opa and Oma. She loved spending time with them and going on daily walks with Opa alongside the Isar River in Munich.
The whole Luxner family :)
We got to visit our dear friends, Josh and Miriam Colvin. Having graduated from TMS, Josh is one of the professors at EBTC’s extension in Klagenfurt, Austria.
A highlight of the trip was the visit of the Corral family, who are serving as missionaries in Madrid, Spain. Though we hardly see each other, we love them and pray for them regularly. For more information about their ministry, visit: gracechurch.org/madrid.

Fall at ICB Church

Alberto continues to teach at our local TMAI extension, a part of Word of Grace Bible Seminary. He’s wrapping up this year’s Bible Survey classes and is preparing to teach Theology classes next year.

Teaching New Testament Survey I (Matthew to 2 Thessalonians) at our local TMAI extension.
The group from our local church that attended Expositores Conference at Grace Community Church. It is exciting to see how God continues to bring men and woman to our church who are eager to grow and serve the Lord. These people are dear treasures!
Earlier this month, Alberto traveled north to the city of Mexicali (right across the border from California), to speak at a local youth conference. Hosted by Gracia & Paz Church, more than a hundred young people gathered to study how we can best defend and explain our faith. Alberto was asked to speak about the reliability of Scripture and the truthfulness of the resurrection accounts. He had a blast spending time with Nathan Diaz, pastor in Mexico City.
Taking pictures of church members. We are making our first ever members’ booklet! This is an exciting step as we get to know each other and fellowship as a local family. Eleven people are currently taking our membership class, and more are waiting for classes to start up again. Pray for us, that strong friendships may develop and Christ may be exalted!

Answered prayers

A few months ago we asked for prayer concerning the property we rent for church, that the Lord would allow us to arrive at a better deal with the owners. By God’s grace, they agreed to lower the rent, and in exchange we will renovate the restrooms. This is an incredible answer to prayer! And if that wasn’t enough, they agreed to not raise the rent cost for the next two years, which is no small thing, given the rising cost of living around us. Praise the Lord! We have a place to meet for the next two years!

We are all very grateful to the Lord for allowing us to meet in such a beautiful location. Come and visit to see it for yourself!
The blueprint of the new bathrooms at ICB church. God continues to faithfully provide for all of our needs! Next projects: Two classrooms, a nursery, and more chairs!

Coming up this month

  • Alberto will be teaching New Testament Survey II (Romans to Revelation).
  • Noemí, Alberto’s sister who is studying at TMU, will come down for a visit. Sophia really misses her and will be so excited to see her.

Prayer requests

  • Pray for Kathy, that she may grow in wisdom to know how to manage our home with two babies and that she may find comfort and strength in Christ.
  • Pray for Alberto, that God may grant him wisdom and that the Holy Spirit may powerfully use him through his preaching and teaching ministries.
  • Pray for the church’s members and those taking our membership class, that we may learn to function as a local family, built and grounded in love.

September 2019 Newsletter

Dear friends and supporters, God’s Word is sufficient and incredible. A few weeks ago a lady started attending our church, and was amazed because for the first time she was being taught clear biblical teachings. She couldn’t contain her tears as she told us: “I never knew one could understand the Bible this clearly!” She, like many, spent many years in local churches that misuse and twist Scripture, and now is being exposed and refreshed by the Word (cf. Ps 19:9). It reminded us of the word of Nehemiah 8. Because faithful preachers read and explained the Scriptures (cf. 8:8), “all the people went their way to eat and drink and to send portions and to make great rejoicing, because they had understood the words that were declared to them” (Neh 8:12).

Vacation Bible School @ Outreach location

For the last four years, Marco Serna, a fellow elder at church, has been hosting a weekly Bible study for children at an outreach location just north of the city. Every Saturday morning, he and his family drive north to share the Gospel in an area that desperately needs a Christian church. This year we had the wonderful blessing of having a team from San Tan Bible Church (Gilbert, AZ) to help us organize and lead an outreach VBS to attract more children from that area. The plan, in God’s providence, is to start an adult Bible study and from it the beginnings of a new local church.

Marco and his daughter Ruth, leading the kids in their morning warmup routine. All the kids love it when the Serna family comes to teach them!
Bible story time. Praise the Lord, we had an incredible team of translators ready to help out.
No VBS would be complete without a few games :).
Thankful for our San Tan Bible Church family and their love and care by sending this wonderful team to help with a local outreach VBS. You all are an example of love and service!

Local Pastors’ Conference

Earlier in August, Alberto was invited to speak at a local pastors’ conference just south of the city.  It was a privilege for him to meet pastors from multiple states in Mexico and hear about what the Lord is doing in their churches. His sessions, based on Hebrews 10:19–39, dealt with the marks of a true Christian vs. those of a false believer.

Alberto, with the pastors of the hosting church, Iglesia Rosa de Sarón, and fellow speaker Carlos Lopez, a current TMS student and pastor at Iglesia Bautista Por Su Gracia in San Diego, CA.

Summer visitors

This summer we had the wonderful privilege of receiving a few guests at our home in Mexico. First, Jonathan Tucker (TMS student) and two elders from South View Chapel (Brian and Dan) came for a visit to talk about possible future plans. Then came the STM groups and had a wonderful time spending time with dear friends that so lovingly sacrificed their time and energy to come and serve this local church. Finally, we were honored to have Mark Tatlock and Bryan Tahmisian from TMAI (The Master’s Academy Intl.), president and director, respectively, for a quick visit.

Jonathan Tucker and Alberto with a group of volunteers about to go knocking on doors after our worship service, to invite kids to one of the summer’s VBS. The church is so blessed by families like these that have a heart for the lost around the church’s local area.

Coming up this month

  • This month we will be celebrating ICB church’s two year anniversary later this month. God has been SO faithful these last 24 months and we are constantly blown away by His mercy, care, and love. Thank you all for your prayers, love, and support, it is what sustains us day after day.
  • Toby, Kathy’s youngest brother, will be getting married the third weekend of September in Munich, Germany. Lord willing, we will be in Germany for a few weeks in order to attend the wedding and have some time off as a family.

Prayer requests

  • Please pray for the children that attended our local VBS and for their parents, that God would use the memory verses, crafts, and lessons they all took home to bring them to salvation. Likewise, pray for the youth that attended the conference, that they too may come to salvation by God’s grace.
  • Pray for our time in Germany, that it may be a time of refreshment for us as a family. Pray also that we would be of encouragement for Kathy’s parents’ local church in Munich, Germany. Alberto will be preaching there on September 15th.
  • Pray for Kathy as she continues to learn how to manage a house hold with two babies, that she may find comfort and strength in Christ.
  • For Alberto, that God may grant him wisdom and that the Holy Spirit may powerfully use him through his preaching and teaching ministries. Particularly, pray as he plans his preaching and teaching schedule for the rest of the year.

June 2019 Newsletter

Thank you so much for your prayers and support. Lately Alberto has been preaching through John 5 on Sunday mornings. Being a chapter full of Gospel truths, we have often been reminded of God’s grace and love as He saves people from every tribe, tongue, and nation, including Mexico. And those whom He saves pass from death to life, from condemnation to adoption, from judgment to liberation. As John 5:24 states, “Truly, truly, I say to you, whoever hears my word and believes him who sent me has eternal life. He does not come into judgment, but has passed from death to life.”

Baptisms and New Members

A few Sundays ago we had baptisms and new members’ presentation at church. It is always a wonderful time! To see redeemed souls walking in obedience, makes everything worth it! Here are some highlights and pictures.

Alberto, baptizing those whom the Lord has recently saved. What a great day it was for this local body of believers!
“Go therefore and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit, teaching them to observe all that I have commanded you” (Matt 28:19–20).
Everyone that was baptized shared their testimony of salvation, and highlighted how God had redeemed them from bondage of sin and given them new life in Christ. Praise the Lord!
A family—dad, mom, and daughter—were baptized. A glorious picture of Acts 16:32–33: “And they spoke the word of the Lord to him and to all who were in his house… and he, and all his family, was baptized at once.”
Sixteen new church members were presented before the congregation. Praise the Lord for what He continues to do in this local church! As you can see, Kathy is included, as she missed the last few members’ presentations.
Church fellowship after baptisms and new members presentation.
After baptisms, some kids jumped in the pool and had a blast!

Please continue to pray for those that got baptized and those that have recently joined the church as members. Pray that they would grow in godliness and knowledge. And pray that they would find areas to faithfully serve each other, as they display Christ’s love to everyone around them.

Baby #2 is almost here

Praise the Lord Ana Elena, at 40 weeks old, is doing very well, and all that is left is for her to be born in the next hours or days :). We are excited and nervous! Thankfully, Kathy’s mom is on her way from Germany, and she is always a huge help for the whole family.

Wrapping up our first men’s theology class

For the last year and a half, Alberto has been faithfully meeting with some men from church to pray, study God’s Word and work their way through Systematic Theology and its practical implications both in personal lives as well as in the context of the local church. Every Tuesdays morning at 6am they come to deepen their understanding of Scripture and study how can they best serve in this local church. This month they will finish their 1.5 year long study on theology, and take a summer break. Pray for Alberto, that God may give him wisdom to what he should do next with the men from church.

Men’s theology class, every Tuesday at 6am.

Prayer requests

  • Please pray for those that got baptized and joined the church, that they may continue to grow in holiness and knowledge, and that those visiting would see a visual testimony of the power of God for salvation.
  • Pray for Kathy as she goes through labor and recuperation during the following weeks. Pray also for her as she learns to balance life with the addition of little Ana Elena.
  • For Alberto, that God may grant him wisdom and that the Holy Spirit may powerfully use him through his preaching and teaching ministries. Pray for him as he oversees the summers activities, which are full of evangelism opportunities through a couple of VBS and a youth conference (more on this on next month’s newsletter).

May 2019 Newsletter

Dear friends and supporters, greetings from hot, sunny Mexico. May is the hottest month of the year, with temperatures reaching over 100 degrees. Recently Alberto preached on Jesus’ words in John 4:38, “others have labored and you have entered into their labor.” Salvation belongs to God, and it is He that directs people, circumstances and events for His glory as He saves His people. As we testify of the saving power of His Gospel, we enter into His work and that of countless men and women that have gone before us and partner with us in this endeavor. He saves, we are merely tools in the Lord’s hands.

Church life

These last few months we have seen the church grow yet again. Visitors come in every Sunday, and the Lord continues adding those that are being saved. Continue to pray for us that, as ministry gets tougher and counseling takes longer, we may continue to faithfully serve new comers and be a blessing to them. And pray for those coming and staying, that they may find intentional discipleship and commitment.

Alberto leading the church in singing, while Kathy plays the piano. Since the church’s music leader left to attend The Master’s Seminary, Alberto has been back to leading music while he equips other men to help in this ministry.
Alberto teaching Fundamental of Faith class. Pray for those attending, as they deepen their love for Jesus and confidence in God’s Word.
The church’s Fundamentals of Faith class also serves as our membership class. Meaning, most of those attending are looking at becoming new members. Pray for them, as they develop intentional friendships at church and pursue holiness in community.
A resent new practices that we’ve adopted, is the giving out of books for free. Every Wednesday night, Alberto hands out free books to church goers, in order to promote theologically sound resources and reading in discipleship groups. The people have responded very well. Your generous donations makes this ministry possible—thank you!
Like we highlighted in our last newsletter, one of the many ministries opportunities we’ve been blessed by is weddings. This has proven to be a wonderful opportunity to share the gospel with non-Christian attendees. This month he officiated the wedding of Carolina & Jakub Laurovic.

Family update

As we head into the summer, we are thrilled that Kathy is due in only four weeks. Lord willing our second daughter, Ana Elena, will come around mid-June. We couldn’t be any happier! Please pray for Kathy in these last weeks of pregnancy, and for the baby as she is sitting sideways.

Visiting a small town outside of Guadalajara.
This past Sunday, Alberto graduated in absentia from The Master’s Seminary. Although he had already completed all of the Master of Theology required courses before moving to Mexico, he needed to finish his thesis. Praise the Lord it’s done! His thesis, under the supervision of Dr. Osborne, was: “The Messianic Banquet: An Investigation into the Eschatological Implications of the Lord’s Supper.
Harold and Eddie visiting us from Grace Church Napa Valley, CA. Thank you for your visit!

Prayer requests

  • The last Sunday of the month we’ll be celebrating baptisms and new members presentation. Please pray for those getting baptized and those joining the church, that they may continue to grow in holiness and knowledge, and that those visiting would see a visual testimony of the power of God for salvation.
  • For Alberto, as he plans out the preaching schedule for the next half of 2019. Pray for wisdom and that the Holy Spirit may powerfully use God’s Word from this church’s pulpit. Pray also for his teaching ministry as he wraps up OT Survey and Theology classes before the summer.
  • For Kathy as she heads into the last weeks of her second pregnancy. Pray for the baby, Ana Elena, that she may turn rightly so that this may be a natural birth.
